Justyna Budzik, Ph.D.

Justyna Budzik, Ph.D.

 

Dr. Budzik holds a Ph.D. in literature from the Jagiellonian University (2011, an M.A. in culture studies with a specialization in American studies (Jagiellonian University, 2003), and a B.A. in English Studies (Jagiellonian University, 2001). She completed the Literary Translation Studies Course for Interpreters at the UNESCO Chair in Translation and Intercultural Communication of the Faculty of Philology of the Jagiellonian University in 2003..s. In 2007, she received a scholarship from the Polish Publishing Fund in Canada (2007) to conduct doctoral research in Toronto and Vancouver. Dr. Budnik has given several lectures at the Consulates General of Poland in Toronto (2015, 2016, 2017) and New York (2017). In 2005-2017, she was employed at the Institute of English Studies (Jagiellonian University).

  • 2014-2016: Director for extramural B.A. English studies including German language training (English Studies, Jagiellonian University)
  • 2015-2017: Supervisor of the Students’ Research Society of English Studies including German language training (Jagiellonian University).

  • Twentieth century Polish émigré literature written in North America;
  • bilingualism and multiculturalism in Polish émigré literature;
  • intertextuality in the poetry of Czesław Miłosz, Bogdan Czaykowski, and Andrzej Busza;
  • the Anglo-American literary tradition in the works of Polish writers on the North American continent;
  • literature and its relationship to art;
  • literary translations and their function in the works written by Polish writers in North America.

Research projects and media

  • 1st-31st May, 2022, “Correspondence between literature and art-ekphrases in poetic and essayistic works of American and Polish writers residing on the North American continent”. Funding: Polish-Canadian Publishing Fund.
  • Dr. Budzik is currently collecting material for a book devoted to syncretism of arts and the correspondence between literature and art in Polish literature written in the Americas.
  • She is a member of the research project at the Józef Tischner Institute (Krakow): "Images of God, Human Being and the World in Literature", for which she is currently preparing a chapter: "Homo hesitans and homo confidens: Between Philosophy and Religious Experience – God in the Poetry of Bogdan Czaykowski."
