Palmares Foundation was created in 1988 in the context of the Brazilian re-democratization, and while celebrating one hundred years of the abolition of slavery in Brazil. Ever since it has played a central role in Afro-Brazilian memory, and in the articulation of public policies in this area. The election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018 marks a point of inflection for this Foundation, to the extent that it started to be used as a space for the dissemination of a conception of the racial debate which reflects the vision of conservative movements in Brazil, marked by the denial of racism, and by the resurgence of the “myth of racial democracy”. During his lecture, Dr Oliveira will analyze how forgetfulness became an institutional policy at Palmares Foundation, and how this policy is related to a certain conception about racial relations in Brazil.
Amurabi Oliveira is Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology and Political Science, Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Global Young Academy. His latest research focuses on the rise of conservative movements and its impacts on education as well as the influence of disinformation on democracy. Among his most recent publications are the book Ethnography for educators (in Portuguese, UNESP 2023) and paper National curricula and citizenship education in populist times. The cases of Brazil and Spain in Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education co-authored with Marta Estellés and Jordi Castellví.
