Dr. Gregory F. Domber and Dr. Kelly Bodwin

Please join us for a Work-in-Progress Talk by Dr. Gregory F. Domber (Senior U.S. Fulbright Fellow 2022-2023) and Dr. Kelly Bodwin (Assistant Professor of Statistics, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo) about their work creating a unique dataset on participants in Poland’s Round Table (RT) Negotiations and their use of a purpose-built R Shiny app to visualize and measure the connections between participants from 1950 to 1989, providing insights into how the network of elites—including opposition figures, government-coalition members, experts, and church observers—transformed over time.

This project’s dataset (built by Dr. Domber) aggregates biographical information on the 550+ activists who participated in the RT negotiations, tracing the universities, workplaces, Party and government agencies, political parties, strike committees, and independent society organizations they joined and left over their lives before February 1989. Each affiliation includes a beginning and end date. An R Shiny application designed by Dr. Bodwin creates visualizations of the connections between individuals (nodes) who were simultaneously part of the same institution (edges). The Shiny app allows for rapid calculations to create network maps for different dates, visualizing how connections transformed longitudinally from day to day, month to month, or year to year. The app also allows for calculations of betweenness centrality to quantify the importance of different nodes to the overall network at specific times. Dr. Domber and Dr. Bodwin will be discussing the design of the dataset and the Shiny application, as well as early insights into the development of the Round Table networks. Particular attention will be paid to the place in the network of RT members who participated in exchanges to the United States. There will be ample time for questions, comments, and suggestions. Presentations will be in English.
