Interpretations of the Brazilian Society

dr Amurabi Pereira de Oliveira

Our Institute will host visiting scholar dr Amurabi Pereira de Oliveira from the Department of Sociology and Political Studies (Departamento de Sociologia e Ciência Política) at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, in October. During his stay supported by the Coimbra Group framework dr Oliveira will conduct his research on the impact of right-wing governments on academic performance in the fields of social sciences and humanities. Also, dr Oliveira will hold a series of lectures as part of a mini-course Interpretations of the Brazilian Society. The general objective of the course is to present students with a general introduction to socio-historical interpretations of the social and cultural reality of Brazil, focusing on classic authors, such as Gilberto Freyre and Sergio Buarque de Holanda, and contemporaries such as Roberto DaMatta and Jessé Souza. The main idea is to think about the past and present of Brazilian society but in an articulated way.
