Venezuela on the Precipice: United States Intervention?

Data: 22.05.2019
Czas rozpoczęcia: 11.30-12.45
Miejsce: Rynek Główny 34, room 36

To speak of the present Venezuelan crisis feels like a platitude. The death of former President Hugo Chavez to cancer in 2013 and the election one month later of his groomed predecessor, Nicolás Maduro, preceded by months plummeting oil prices. Dwindling oil revenues leading to shortages and decreasing living standards catapulted the country from one calamity to the next. During this presentation, I will discuss the historical context of the current and volatile economic, humanitarian, and political crisis in Venezuela that deepened after the highly controversial May re-election of Maduro. U.S. intervention in the current standoff between Maduro and Juan Guaidó, head of the opposition-led National Assembly and proclaimed acting president, is indisputable. The real question is whether the United States will intervene militarily and at what cost to the region as a whole.
