Latin American Seminar

In 2021 ten Latin American countries hold elections, five of them will elect presidents. The event will be centered around this theme. Programme: TBA

Zuzanna Kowalczyk, University of Lodz 

Wind of change or more of the same? What do election results in Central America tell us about the future of the region.

Zuzanna Kowalczyk holds a PhD in Political Science from the Faculty of International and Political Studies at the University of Lodz. She is the member of Polish Association of Latin American Studies (PTSL), where she served as the Secretary of the second Ignacio Domeyko’s Latin American Congress in 2019. Dr. Kowalczyk published in specialist journals dedicated to Latin American politics and political science and participated in a number of international congresses, including the International Congress of Americanists (in Mexico, Vienna and Salamanca). In 2009 she did research in Mexico and also conducted studies at the University of Santiago de Compostela, did documentary research in the Ibero-American Institute in Berlin, in the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. and at the Univeristy of Oviedo. Her main field of specialization are political systems, democratization and transition, as well as the future and consolidation of stable democratic governments in Central America. Dr. Kowalczyk’s research further includes the destabilizing impact of organized crime groups on Central American political systems and their (in)stability. 

Ieva Giedraityte, Vilnius University  

Venezuelan mega-elections: what has happened and what now?

Ieva Giedraityte holds a PhD in Political Science (Vilnius University, 2021) and MA in Latin American Studies (Barcelona University, 2010). Lecturer and researcher at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science, Vilnius University. Her research interests are EU external action, Latin American studies (focus on Central America), and development cooperation. Dr. Giedraityte spent several years working as a trainee for different EU development cooperation bodies (DG DEVCO and in the EU Delegation in Honduras).

Magdalena Lisińska, Jagiellonian University 

2021 legislative elections in Argentina - implications for the current political situation

Magdalena Lisińska holds a PhD in Political Science from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow where she also completed Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in International Relations, as well as a Master of Arts degree in Latin American studies. Assistant professor at the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Her research interests include Argentine domestic and foreign policy, international relations in the Western Hemisphere and security challenges in Latin America, mainly organized crime. 

Event will be held in English.
