Guest lecture by Dr. Bea Tomšič Amon

The symbolic construction of Latin America is an important element in the discussion of identity, which could be linked to the issue of urban development. Urban development is a cultural process that involves questions about space, social relations, the environment, politics, various interests, and even personal identity. It is linked to material culture and reflects the characteristics of popular culture and the context in which it develops. Cultural identity is usually characterized by "Europe/America-centred visions" vs. "national ways," "regionalism" vs. "international movements," which keeps open vivid reflections on the elements that shape identity in the "postmodern, globalized world." The topics addressed in the lecture point to a comparative analysis of the processes of development of the city in Latin America and its evolution into a mythical source of spatial, cultural, social and even national identity, sometimes based on reality and sometimes on fiction. The beginning of the 21st century means a new period of evaluation, recognition of specific differences and redefinition of the concepts of national identity, region, continent and so on: It seems that through the popularization of the "exotic" Latin America in the eyes of Europe and the United States, a new process of "globalization" is taking place. By focusing on popular culture, we will try to answer questions about its role, its meaning and its characteristics in this vast territory, where many observers have little confidence in the manageability of such enormous conglomerates; many worry about the future.
