Transatlantic Encounters: Prof. Giles Scott-Smith

This lecture makes the claim that the years 1989-2020 represented a distinct 'transatlantic era' that is now passing. Transatlantic relations continue to be prominent in global politics, but are no longer the driving force behind global governance. On both sides of the Atlantic, political, economic, and cultural divisions have undermined transatlantic solidarity and we are now moving into a more multipolar environment. This lecture is based on the book project The Transatlantic Era in Documents and Speeches (1989-2020), planned for publication in 2021.

Giles Scott-Smith holds the Roosevelt Chair in New Diplomatic History at Leiden University, and is connected to the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies. He is active in the New Diplomatic History network, and one of the founding editors of Diplomatica: A Journal of Diplomacy and Society.
